Autogenic Training
Did everyone enjoy that exercise as much as I did? I am truly a fan of guided relaxation techniques. I believe that autogenic training is a great way to relax our body. I liked the analogy of our muscles being like a sponge, and the more relaxed they are the more flexible they are. I am convinced that there is a reason that I was directed into this field of study. Even though my final goal for my career is public health, I feel I was steered in the direction of health and wellness to better my life. I have always been a very emotional person that tends to fly off the handle at the slightest of situations, but after taking several classes I now know that there are ways to calm myself so that does not happen, and I will be a healthier happy person because of it.

Yes I did enjoy it as long as it lasted. I have the problem that I pretty much immediately return to the stress - mostly children induced! But I read in our text book that once one can, like the mental Olympians, stay in the moment for a period of time one can actually act, rather than react, to any disturbance in a calm way (Dacher, 2006). That would be so wonderful! I think I am going to train my mind to do that...

I hope that I can do that also. I have been trying so hard to avoid getting stressed, but it is a lot harder than I thought it would be. I guess that is because that is the way my mind has been trained to react. I'm hoping with practice and patience I will be able to retrain my mind to be more calm.
ReplyDeleteDawn, I know what you mean about being tempermental and flying off the handle for the slightest of reasons. I hate that about myself and I try not to let it happen but it IS very hard to stop.
ReplyDeleteThis course, and my managing stress course both seem to offer solutions to this problem. I can guarantee you though, nothing is going to change overnight. We're going to have to spend a long time working really hard to train our minds to react differently to stressful situations.
I really enjoyed this exercise, as well. I get very tense muscles and this was really effective in relieving muscle tension. I also liked the analogy of the sponge becoming saturated. Great blog! Thanks for letting us read your mind :)
ReplyDeleteHi Dawn! I had concentration/distraction issues with trying to do this exercise. I am going to try again tonight. Hopefully it works out. :) I have such a short temper, it will be interesting to see if these relaxation exercises help me at all. :)
